Episode 8: A Piece Of The Action and Patterns Of Force

In terms of aesthetic, A Piece Of The Action and Patterns Of Force are two of the most iconic episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series but are they any good?

In this episode of Whom Pods Destroy Derek, Terry and Graham talk about these two second season episodes. We speculate as to what, if anything, they were trying to say culturally and politically. We also examine Patterns Of Force’s very specific contribution to fan fiction.

Episode 7: Prime Directive, Cargo Cults & Village People

villagepeople

The Prime Directive: a super-trope that has been the effective source of dramatic tension for a host of Star Trek episodes.

In this edition of Whom Pods Destroy, Terry, Graham and Derek look at the genesis of the non-interference rule and pick out some good and not so good examples of Starfleet’s most important law.

Episode 6: Errand of Mercy and Day of the Dove

kirkandkor3After our broad discussion on Klingons from the original series of Star Trek in Episode 5, we look at two classic Klingon TOS episodes: Errand of Mercy and Day of the Dove.

Errand of Mercy is one of our favourite episodes of TOS and we examine the rich plot that would probably fill an entire story arc if it were a modern TV show. We also talk about the Organians and speculate as to the nature of Kirk’s relationship with Kor.

Being a third season episode we were a little more cautious about Day of the Dove. However, we were more than pleasantly surprise by this episode and found much that relates to the times that we live in now.

Episode 5: Original Series Klingons

kor1

Join Terry, Derek and Graham on an epic journey through the Klingons of Star Trek The Original Series and subsequent movies.

The guys discuss the three big Klingon characters of TOS: Kor, Kang & Koloth and compare them to their ridged compatriots in the movies such as Kruge, Gorkon, Chang and co. They ask if there is any connections with post TOS Klingons and if the stories told featuring these Klingons resonate today. The conversation also diverts to a quick chat on the Klingon D7 ships and the Italian space opera Star Crash.

The existence of God or god like entities, the role of religion, and a preoccupation of a creator have often been a feature in The Original Series and movies of Star Trek . In our second episode, Terry Duffelen, Derek Mantle and Graham Sibley discuss God, the creator, and religion in Star Trek and ask if the show had a consistent message on these weighty topics.
